You can get a self-healing cutting mat, a rotary cutter and a steel rule at Amazon, all for less than Â£10 delivered.
It would be much easier on your hands than cutting with scissors!
Made a start on my rug, I have a steel ruler, mat & cutter etc as I have done patch work, I have cut a few strips already but still a massive pile of old t-shirts there, some of the strips I am having to use scissors as can't lay the fabric straight enough due to seams etc, I am going to see what fabric strips I end up with and then do my pattern (on the back - good thing that was pointed out to me) we have just been on holiday and I have been surprised how many prod rugs I have seen, a lot were made into cushions, pictures or just small mats so I don't feel quite as daunted now.
