Using 3¼mm needles and thumb method cast on 71 [75:79:83:87:91] sts.
1st row: K1, * p1, k1, rep from * to end.
2nd row: * P1, k1, rep from * to last st, p1. These 2 rows will now be referred to as 1x1 rib. Work 4 rows more in 1x1 rib.
7th row: Rib 2 [4:6:2:4:6], MB, * rib 5, MB, rep from * to last 2 [4:6:2:4:6] sts, rib 2 [4:6:2:4:6].
8th row: * P1, k1, rep from * to last st, p1.
Change to 4mm needles and proceed as follows:-

1st row: K6 [3:4:1:4:2], pick up loop between last and next stitch and work into back of this loop (this will now be referred to m1), (k10 [10:9:9:8:8], m1) 6 [7:8:9:10:11] times, k5 [2:3:1:3:1]. 78 [83:88:93:98:103] sts.
2nd row: Purl.
3rd row: Knit.
4th row: Purl.
3rd and 4th rows will now be referred to as st-st (stocking stitch). Working in st-st (throughout) proceed as follows:-
5th row: K6 [3:4:1:4:2], m1, (k11 [11:10:10:9:9], m1) 6 [7:8:9:10:11] times, k6 [3:4:2:4:2]. 85 [91:97:103:109:115] sts. Work 3 rows more without shaping.

13th row: K6 [3:4:1:4:2], m1, (k13 [13:12:12:11:11], m1) 6 [7:8:9:10:11] times, k8 [5:6:4:6:4].
99 [107:115:123:131:139] sts. Work 3 rows more without shaping.
17th row: K6 [3:4:1:4:2], m1, (k14 [14:13:13:12:12], m1) 6 [7:8:9:10:11] times, k9 [6:7:5:7:5].
106 [115:124:133:142:151] sts. Cont without shaping until beret measures 10cm, (4in), ending with a rs row.
Next row: Purl to end dec 0 [2:4:0:1:3] sts evenly across row for 2nd, 3rd, 5th and 6th sizes only and inc 0 [0:0:1:0:0] sts in centre of row for 4th sizes only. 106 [113:120:134:141:148] sts.

Next row: K1, (k2tog, k4) 15 [16:17:19:20:21] times. 76 [81:86:96:101:106] sts. Work 3 [3:5:5:5:5] rows more without shaping.
Next row: K1, (k2tog, k3) 15 [16:17:19:20:21] times. 61 [65:69:77:81:85] sts. Work 3 [3:3:5:5:5] rows more without shaping.
Next row: K1, (k2tog, k2) 15 [16:17:19:20:21] times. 46 [49:52:58:61:64] sts. Work 3 [3:3:3:3:5] rows more without shaping.
Next row: K1, (k2tog, k1) 15 [16:17:19:20:21] times. 31 [33:35:39:41:43] sts. Work 1 [1:1:1:3:3] rows more without shaping.
Next row: K1, (k2tog) 15 [16:17:19:20:21] times. 16 [17:18:20:21:22] sts.
Next row: (P2tog) 8 [8:9:10:10:11] times, p0 [1:0:0:1:0]. 8 [9:9:10:11:11] sts. Break off yarn, run yarn through rem 8 [9:9:10:11:11] sts, draw up and fasten off.
