Hi There

I am knitting socks with 2 needles (not circular) I've got to the part where it sas divide for heel and I have no idea what to do - can somebody please help.

This is what the pattern says:

Next Row:

Slip first 10 sts onto the right hand needle, slip the next 19 sts onto a stitch holder for instep, slip the rem 10 sts onto a spare needle and turn

With rs facing rejoin yarn to instep edge of the 10 stst at end of row and knit to end, turn the spare needle around and knit across teh 10 sts on spare needle. 20 sts.

I'm fairly new to knitting so... when they say slip sts they mean just put them onto a new needle right without knitting. so I've done that and held the sts on a holder, but I don't get what they mean for the last 10 and I can't seem to get my yarn to join up without causing a total pickle.

Please, please help. I was doing so well til this point. I've tried youtube and google for a vid to help me but they're all for circular needles.

Hi,

I've not done socks on 2 needles (believe me, 4/5 sock needles are easier) but I'll try to help.

so... when they say slip sts they mean just put them onto a new needle right without knitting.
That's right

so I've done that and held the sts on a holder, but I don't get what they mean for the last 10 and I can't seem to get my yarn to join up without causing a total pickle.

now break the yarn and join it again where you need to start knitting

You have to work the shaping for the heel on each side before joining everything up again and knitting the rest of the sock.

Hope that helps

I've knitted socks on 2 needles and never had to do this - but it sounds simple enough from what you said.

Not sure exactly where you have got stuck..is it when you need to re-join the yarn? Do you know how to do this? Yes slip sts is to move them onto a needle/holder without knitting them.

You need to knit your 1st set of 10sts and then knit across your 2nd set of 10sts (ensuring they are the right way round). This can feel strange and the 'join' can be quite loose but when you have done a few rows it will look fine.

Sorry it is hard to give specific advice without knowing which pattern you are using. But feel free to ask more questions if you need to.

Hi

Yeah its mainly the bit where I have to rejoin the yarn that is getting me in a pickle. I'm not entirely sure where or how I'm meant to start knitting as the yarn seems to be in the totally the wrong end.

If I do break it off as was suggested, where do I start it up again?

Is the pattern online or from a book? Would be easier to see the whole thing or at least a pic. I am trying to picture it. I can see that you would either have to break the yarn and then you just attach it (thread it through and knot it) to the first stitch on your needle to knit ; or the sts would have the yarn at the correct end anyway....

I've done a little diagram - I hope it helps

1) Slip 1st 10 sts onto right needle - RED A - B
2) Slip next 19 sts onto holder GREEN
3) Slip last 10sts onto spare needle BLUE C - D

(You'll see that the spare needle is facing the other way)
Now, cut the yarn at A and rejoin it at B
Knit the 10sts - B to A - bring your spare needle around and carry on and knit the 10 sts - D to C (20sts)

The diagram helps loads! Thanks. However I've done as you've said and knit the first couple of rows but had to turn the work around and consequently it's turned my pattern inside out.

I'm still doing something wrong I think.

So when I rejoin the yarn to A, I have to turn the work around otherwise the stitches I am knitting is on my right hand and the empty needle on my left - which surely can't be right.

It does say on my pattern.... with rs facing, rejoin yarn to instep edge of the 12 sts at end of row and knit to end, turn the spare needle around and knit across the 12 sts on spare needle. But in order to knit them I have to turn it so it's with ws facing.

what am I doing wrong stil?

Hmmm. So I figured it out... I just purled when it told me to knit and my knitting kept it's pattern.

However, I'm turning the heel now. the pattern goes as follows:

1st row: K11, s1, k1, psso, k1 turn
2nd row: p4, p2tog, p2 turn
3rd row: k5, s1, k1, psso, k1 turn
4th row: p6, p2tog, p1 turn
Cont dec as set to 12 sts

What does 'cont dec as set to 12 sts mean?

do I just repeat rows 1 to 4 as above until I have 12 sts left on my needle? I guess so right?

xx

Jeeez - who knew knitting socks would be so hard! xxx

Thanks for all your help.
