I really want to make the Yolanda bag from this months issue of LK but the Rowan yarn used is too expensive for me and apparantly the suggested alternative has been discontinued!!!!

Where would y'all suggest I start looking for an alternative to the Rowan?

Thanks for that, but I need to be able to buy it in store, I'm really wary of online shopping, I've been ripped off way too many times by online retailers.

Ah ok fair enough... I should imagine as the merino is 100% DK wool anything like that would work?

Hi Knithulu

Sorry that the stated alternative has been discontinued. As long as you choose a 100% wool, NON-superwash DK, it should be fine as an alternative.

Thanks for all the advice, I'm hoping Sirdar has something along the lines of a 100% wool non super wash Dk ... their yarns are usually well withing my price range.

Hmmm it appears that they have something similar ... The skeins are even the same meterage as the rowan but the gauge is different.

Sirdar Eco Wool DK; 22 stitches/28 rows = 10 cm

Hmm ... as this bag is to be felted would it make a huge amount of difference? And if it does would substituting smaller needles help me to get that gague?

Superwash that I know of is an acrylic yarn used when a garment needs washing often

Superwash wool has been treated to prevent it from felting and therefore you can machine wash it without it shrinking.

Knithulu - that Sublime yarn they suggest as the substitute is a dk - which would usually knit on 4mm needles - but the pattern uses 5.5mm needles - I assume that because the bag is to be felted, it requires larger needles than usual for the yarn weight. Is the tension on the Sirdar Eco Wool ball band for 4mm needles? If so, that information is not relevant anyway, because the bag is worked on 5.5mm.

Personally I would not worry too much about tension entirely because it is a bag...as long as it is roughly right, you will just get a different sized bag. I doubt it is very exact anyway, since there is always limited control over the felting process.
