Hi there,

I’m a newbie to this forum, I’ve wanted to post on here for a while but have no home internet access which is a bit of a pain but hoping to get it sorted very soon.  Just reading some of the threads on here has shown me what a supportive and creative bunch you are and I look forward to getting more involved in the online community!

Errr…ok, introduce yourself…ummm - I’m a jewellery maker and fell into it sort of by accident.  I’m a trained actress but one Christmas I wasn’t working on a show and nearly all my friends were, so I was very bored and lonely!  I’ve always liked and collected beads since I was a kid but had no idea how to do anything with them, so I searched online for some basic jewellery making instructions, bought a bunch of findings from ebay and started crafting.  Although I only started it as a creative outlet I didn’t anticipate how much I would love it but two years on I’m obsessing over all things jewellery!

I’m hoping to launch a website soon which is pretty daunting as I’ve never really put anything I’ve made into the public sphere before, but I’m finally paying attention to the family and friends who’ve been so encouraging.  (Does everyone feel like it’s weird charging people for something you do for the love of doing it, or is it just me?!)  When I get the website up and running I’ll post a link on here - I’d love to know your feedback.

I’m trying something completely new tomorrow - glass bead making.  Am off to a three-hour workshop to go and learn the basics - I’m sure I’ll be utter rubbish, but hey, we’ve all gotta start somewhere!  I’m looking forward to playing with fire…hehe…

Take care everyone and hope you have great weekends,

Pat

Hello Pat, just wanted to say a very warm welcome to the forum smile

I am Julia, married, with 4 children.  We live near Torquay in Devon.

I am an avid papercrafter, but I do like to dabble in other crafts such as knitting, sewing, egg-crafting, and encaustic art.  I am just starting to gather a few bits and pieces together to start jewellery making too smile

I look forward to chatting with you on the boards and getting to know you better. I am equally looking forward to seeing your new website when you are able to launch it smile  All exciting stuff!

Hugs

Awww, thank you for making me feel so welcome already!  Julia - I LOVE Devon, so beautiful. I used to live in Totnes, definitely an inspiring area to live in. I have to ask - what’s encaustic art? I’m probably being hideously ignorant but i’ve never heard the term before!!  Maggie - thank you very much, all support much appreciated! The internet situation is annoying but i should hopefully be connected by the end of the month (fingers crossed!)  Christiana - love your quote at the end of your post!

Oh and Sarah - i’m with you on the wool issue - can’t even look at some types of thread without getting them tangled! Just had a quick look at your website too - beautiful and so nice that you donate profits to charity.

Not ignorant at all hunny!  Encaustic art is using melted wax as the painting medium.  The most popular way of doing this I believe, is by using an iron and melting the wax on the hot base.  You can get stunning results without being an artist!  A couple of examples of my work…

Hi Pat,
I too have a background in Drama but now just teach it to kids!! I am from London but now live in Yorkshire, and am passionate and completely addicted to Jewellery making lol ! I don’t think it is unusual to feel that way about “selling” your jewellery when you love making it sooo much. But I think a bit of that love is passed on in your pieces! Look forward to seeing some of your makes and chatting more…...

Jules you are so incredibly talented is there anything you can’t do? And you have great legs….lol!! Some people just have it all….

Hi Debs, you’ve got a good point there, the love in making jewellery just shines through i think. I wouldn’t want to sell anything i wasn’t proud of so i guess i should stop worrying - if i like it then the chances are someone else will like it too! That’s cool that you teach drama, i have lots of friends who teach but i don’t think i’d have the patience so hats off to you! Finished my first attempt at a silver ring the other day - will try and remember to post a pic of it when i have one, can get to a computer etc etc… Pat Xx
