I am trying to knit the beret pattern but there seems to be a mistake in the pattern. You have 56 st then have to k2(m1,k2) to the end which gives you 74 stitches not 83 as the pattern says. Does anyone know what the right instuctions are?

Hi there! I know Aims has made 3 of these berets so why not PM her & see if she can help? I'm sure she'll be able to.

Hello Doreen,

The pattern is right but can be a little misleading...what you need to do is k2 stitches and then knit the (m1,k2), the only part you repeat for the rest of the row is the part in brackets so the (m1,k2) and this will give you your 83 stitches smile

So it should be k2, (m1,k2),(m1,k2),(m1,k2) etc for the rest of the row

I hope that makes sense and helps, any other questions please feel free to ask! It's a lovely hat and as Busy said I have made 3 so far!

Hi,
I tried that. I did( m1 k2) repeat after the first k2 but only got 74 stitches. but if I do m1 k1 it gives 83 stitches. Either the pattern wrong or the way i make a new stitch is wrong. I'll do the m1 k1 and see how it looks. Thanks for the tip about sirdar big softee. I bought the cherry pie red and it looks great.

cheers,

Hi Doreen,

I don't understand what you have done as you definatley get 83 stitches! I have just done it on my needles and phoned my mam and she worked it out as 83 stitiches too....how strange?!

Big softee is a lovely wool, I buy far too much of it and at £2.50 a ball its good value...I am currently knitting with Rowan Big Wool which is a lot less cheap and to be honest I don't like it as much but its for a cardi/shrug so it will be nice and warm smile

Hello,

i think how I'am counting it is wrong. When i make a stitch i knit the same stitch twice to get an extra stitch and then i knitted 2 and by doing that got 74 st. But i see that by doing that i'm counting knitting the same stitch twice as m1 when it's actually m1k1. I'm new to this knitting thing. Sorry for being a bit dense.
Looking forward to finishing it. I'll maybe post it on the site when it's finished. I've bought a sirdar pattern for a short sleeved jacket but looks more like a cardigan in big softee wool. I'll try that next in purple. Looks easy enough!! wish me luck.

Thanks very much for your help.

There is no need to apologise, the only reason I am so certain is that I knitted this hat 3 times and each time did something mental I couldn't explain so had to get my mam to sort out he he...

I am also new to knitting so its nice to be able to help each other out smile You should definitely post it when it is finished, I am interested to see what the colour of the wool looks like knitted up! I love it and may consider doing a jumper in that colour you see smile

I think I know which pattern you mean, I have the big softee book with loads of patterns in, told you I was obsessed he he...good luck and keep us updated on your progress!

Hiya Doreen and welcome

M1 is Make 1 The way you're doing it by knitting the same stitch twice is Increase 1 smile I know it can seem complicated, if you increase instead of make (as you've discovered) your stitch count is wrong.

I'll try and explain how to M1 but if I confuse you more LOL if you google M1 knitting you should be able to find a video to help

You use the horizontal bar of wool between the last stitch you knitted and the next one you're going to knit.
This is how I do it: using the tip of my left needle I lift the bar from behind (as I look at it) then I knit the new stitch as normal. As I understand it if you lift the bar the other way (going from near you to away from you) then you need to knit into the back of the stitch to avoid a hole.

HTH and good luck

hello Aims,

Did you use more than 1 ball of wool to make the beret. I needed more than 1 and it's way too big. Think I'll rip it out and try knitting it tighter. Here's a photo of it so you can see how the red looks. it's a great colour.

Ooooh the red is gorgeous! Yeah it takes over 1 ball to make them...

Thats how they are meant to be Doreen, they are quite floppy style berets but if you would like to make it tighter you could try threading ribbon through it like I have done with a few of mine like this...

It really tightens them up and changes the style a little. I am so buying more big softee tomorrow....red here I come he he

That colour looks fantastic! I think I might have to get some for when I start mine grin
It's also nice to know that there's so much help available with the patterns, as a newbie I find it very comforting!

Well done on the hat, its fantastic!
