A few years back , my best friend visited Malasia, she brought me a length of fabric. I never got around to using any of it, but the other week I thought I would have a go at making a bag. This is the result. First attempt at bag making.

It is lined with a plain cream fabric. I sewed some gold beads on front, dont think this photo shows them very well, they just add a bit of bling. Used studs under buttons to fasten the flap.

1950’s felt circle skirt with hot gem iron on motif

finally got around to making this, like the felt skirts this weather, like wearing a warm blanket lol. found the iron on difficult, the larger gems needed more heat for the glue to work, and slightly scorched the fabric when I added more heat with the iron, (inspite of the ironing cloth ) so used the heated tool to add the larger center gems. Not used the heated gems for long so am still learning what can be done, you can not put them in the dryer, but will cool wash (30 fast cycle)

Seam allowance

Hi

Can anyone tell me if the sew mag patterns all have a standard a seam allowance. I can’t seem to find it written on the patterns or in the instruction booklets.
I opened one of the free simplicity patterns and it stated on it the seam allowane but I cannot see it on the sew mag ones? Wasn’t sure if it differed for each pattern or if there was like an industry standard?

Any help greatly appreciated

Natalie

sewing as a craft?

Been reading things on here and got me thinking is sewing changing, years ago it was just for practical use, clothes for the family, mending etc but now more and more seem to buy a sewing machine just for hobby, have to own up to buying a new machine as an early retirement gift from me to me a few years ago, thought buy while I still have cash to spare and it will help fill in all the leisure hours when I retired and I fancied having a go again,(used to make all the family clothes) got the new machine home and did make a few clothing items and then thought what am I doing this for? didn’t enjoy making them and really no cheaper than buying, plus you can’t see if they suit you before they are finished and too late then - so away went the machine, a year ago I pulled it out again and I have enjoyed making other items, bags, cushions, even birthday cards, a lot made from things I already had, why leave that in the wardrobe unused if you can change it into something useful? my daughter has just asked if she can have my old machine which was still in the loft, so we did a cleanup, fed it some oil and off she went to make a start on a quilt which she is doing part by hand and part machine, using bits she had and bits bought cheap, I guess like a lot of crafts not lost and forgotten just changed or is it? Any thoughts?
