Paper Princess
We catch up with designer Ruth Watkins
How did you get into paper design?
I've always had in the back of my mind that I would like to have my own range of papers, rubber stamps and craft kits, so when I was approached by Crafts Creations to design some exclusively for them, I jumped at the chance. I'd already built up a relationship with the company as I had been using their card blanks for some years for my Crafts Beautiful projects.
Could you describe the process that you follow when creating new papers?
Before I put pen to paper, I usually spend a few days mulling over ideas and colour schemes in my head. Then I will put down my ideas on small bits of tracing paper, so that I can easily move different elements around or even reverse them. I also find my scanner very useful as I can quickly resize anything without having to draw it.
What inspires you when creating new designs?
I really enjoy the freedom to add my own interpretation and slant on a given theme. The design phase is the hardest part and will often take the longest time, but I know when I have it right as I feel happy to put my name to it. The part of the process that really inspires me is adding all the colours and details which bring the papers to life. I often imagine crafters using the papers and I love seeing or hearing about what they have created. I have a whole range of other designs coming out soon, including birthdays and a set of cute papers with a baby theme .
What advice would you give to anyone who would like to follow in your footsteps?
Work hard at developing your own style. Those who are commissioning your designs have years of experience in knowing what sells, so listen to any feedback you receive and use it constructively. If things aren't going right, use it as an opportunity to try even harder and you will be rewarded for your efforts!
Why do you like working with paper?
I love working with paper as it is so tactile. I like the feel of a new sheet and often have a problem when deciding what to use it for as it is so versatile.
What's the most unusual/interesting thing you've created from paper?
Recently, I have been using some of my papers to make little photo books. I cut out some of the designs to embellish the pages. I wanted to take some up-to-date photographs of my family to include and made everyone dress up in pastel colours so they would go with the colour scheme!
