  1. Hello Anniebabes and Bigbunniesuk, Thank you for the lovely welcome! Annie, did you knit the cute character in your avatar picture? He looks lovely. I used to have a Knitting Nancy doll when I was a little girl, but I don't remember ever doing much with it other than making long cords! Perhaps I should have done more with it. Carolyn, Thank you for reminding me to look at the links at the top for projects and videos, etc. I did actually overlook that whilst trying to stumble my way around the site. I will take a look now!

Beginner Newbie Help - How to Start Sewing?

Hello Aisles, Thank you so much for your lovely post! I loved reading how you started out. I hadn't thought of getting old bed sheets from a charity shop, what a fantastic idea! I was worried how much fabric might cost me when starting out, and that seems a perfect way to start without being frightened of making a mess of it! I am glad Hand Sewing can make a very strong item (it may take me a little while to learn how to sew correctly though!), as I have been having trouble with handbag straps breaking on me. I would love to be able to learn to make handbags myself, and hopefully make them strong enough to last. What kind of fabric can I use that will be hard wearing, I've been thinking maybe denim, but also maybe canvas? I have a canvas tote bag I bought a few years ago now, and it's still going strong! I love the idea of starting sewing with a needle case and pin cushion, as they will definitely be what I will need. It would be nice to do something small and fun too! I quite fancy the idea of making a voodoo doll style pin cushion, though I might get some strange looks while using one! I will definitely look for different needle cases to do, I may end up doing more than one, so I can separate different types of needles, as I do have some cross stitch needles as well as sewing needles to house. Thank you so much for your help!

Beginner Newbie Help - How to Start Sewing?

Hello Everyone, I am a new stitcher here. At school I vaguely remember doing a little Cross Stitch, sewing a basic rectangle shape lined bag with a zip, and sewing two pieces of fabric together using a sewing machine. But that seems such a long time ago now! I am feeling inspired from watching The Great British Sewing Bee on TV, and would love to start sewing and working from patterns. I was just wondering, where should I start? What project did you start sewing with? What would you recommend I start with? I consider myself to be a complete newbie to sewing, and would love to start from the basics with hand sewing, what do you think I should try making? And can I try making anything without a pattern? Where to begin? Any help and advice you can offer would be very greatly appreciated! Many Thanks,
  4. Hello, I am a newbie here, I joined from the sewmag.co.uk website today, having bought my first issue of the magazine. I'm feeling inspired to try some sewing after watching The Great British Sewing Bee! I also like to dabble with Art Journaling, Scrapbooking (I love Rubber Stamping and Decoupage!), Drawing, and Embroidery. I would love to learn and try Blackwork Embroidery, Tapestry / Needlepoint, Zentangle, and any new Papercraft techniques! Looking forward to making some new likeminded friends on here for some shared inspiration, encouragement and techniques. Best Wishes,
