I HATE gathering bodices and skirts etc and have always done it as per the pattern instructions, which is two sew to lines of basting stitches within the seam allowance and then gather them. I find it very, very difficult to gather them like that, the threads ‘stick’ and refuse to budge and then snap if I pull too hard and I spend more time trying to do that than actually sewing!

I am currently making a 50s style dress with a huge, full skirt which has to be gathered to fit the bodice and the thought of gathering it was filling me with dread, then I found a tutorial, by accident, on the internet which said to simply get a thick thread, like the kind you’d use for cross stitch or embroidery and just stitch a large zig zag stitch over it all the way round and then gather by pulling the embroidery thread, I have just managed to gather the whole thing in 5 seconds flat!!!

I am so pleased with this method I just had to share it!
